Importance Of Text Link Advertising To Improve Online Visibility
By:
Published: January 22, 2007
Similar to trying to hear a whisper in a shouting assembly, gaining people's attention in the crowded online market place can be tough. There are many ways to get attention on a website, but there are perhaps none as popular as the text link.
A text link is a line of text which provides a link to a website. They are coded in HTML and usually provide the name of the website or a short description of the site's content. The text link is a decent, unobtrusive way for websites to link to each other without the use of gaudy banners or intruding flash ads. Additionally, they often allow users a brief glimpse of the content of the website being linked, making it more likely those users will click on a link that interests them.
This is important for two reasons. First, it directly increases the visibility of a site by allowing viewers of one site to click directly over to another. Second, it indirectly increases a website's visibility by affecting its search engine ranking. Search engines like Google, Yahoo! and MSN use backlinks pointing to the websites as a factor in determining their search result rankings. Backlinks are links that one website receives from another website. Websites use backlinks to determine where people are finding out about their page.
Text link advertising has greatly increased in popularity over the past few years. Buying and selling advertising space for links on other pages is nothing new, but as the number of business on the web grows so does the need for more advertising to draw consumers. Text advertising has proven so efficient and viable that Google, which usually derides ads as a measure of a site's popularity, sells its own set of sponsored text links.
One of the quickest ways to obtain and seed advertisements is by entering the site in a text link directory. Directories significantly increase a site's visibility by listing a site to thousands of other sites. However, joining a directory may be a risky proposal. Most search engines feel this practice artificially inflates the relevance of sites and may remove sites they find using text link directories from their engines completely.
Ironically, several text link directories are featured in Google's Sponsored Ad link databases. As a result, a website losing search engine visibility may still be found through the many varied and popular sites of Google's text links. It is a kind of situation where the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing. For those concerned about the loss of position on search engines by joining a directory, it might not be as much of a loss as it initially appears.
Backlinks and text links are excellent resources for new and growing websites to gain a foothold on an already crowded web. In comparison to graphics and flash ads, text ads are cheaper and cleaner. They also provide website advertising within a blurb of text. Their easy use and more direct, informative nature, make text links a great option to help improve online visibility for web businesses.
