The Internet is an immense portal containing billions of pages of information. Such a large number can be daunting to website domain owners wanting to provide products, services and information that will be accessible to visitors. Fortunately, a helpful tool exists to prevent websites from falling into a black hole within the galaxy of the Internet.

Search engine optimization or SEO is the process of making websites accessible to both Internet users and search engines. It uses specific keywords or keyword phrases to increase a website's ranking within search engines in order to attract visitor traffic. In order to fully understand the importance of SEO, it is necessary to understand how search engines operate.

Search engines are the navigators of the Internet. They help direct visitors through the billions of pages that make up Internet traffic. Search engines like Google and Yahoo! are basically large databases which index websites and web content information. A visitor types a search term into a search box and the search engine uses its index to provide results that match the search term.

Search engines use a program called a spider or a crawler to scan the pages of a website. The spider or crawler scans pages in order to index the content into the search engine's database. The information is indexed according to keywords and keyword phrases found within the content.

Search engines use a mathematical equation to calculate the relevancy and popularity of a website in comparison to other websites containing similar content. The calculations are used to determine a website's s ranking in search results. A website's ranking is important because it determines the degree to which it will be matched against a visitor's search term.

SEO is a useful tool for achieving a high ranking in the search engine result pages or SERP. SEO is primarily concerned with optimizing a website's ranking through keyword density. Keyword density is the number of times a keyword appears within the text of a webpage. A keyword density of 5-15% is recommended to achieve a good ranking.

Keywords are important in SEO because they are used to describe and search web content. Crawler and spider programs only recognize and index text. As a result, it's important for website owners to correctly utilize keywords in order to achieve a high ranking. Keywords are used in a website's URL, title tags, meta data and content.

SEO uses programs like Wordtracker to conduct keyword research in order to determine which keywords to target. Wordtracker indexes the number of times visitors use a certain keyword to perform a search. This is a helpful tool for website owners in determining which keywords are most likely to generate visitor traffic.

Website owners also utilize SEO to prevent their domains from falling into obscurity. Visitor traffic is important for a website to obtain relevancy and a modem of success. Successful websites are accessible, maintain useful content picked up by search engines and are easy to navigate for the end user.
